A Case Study in Re-Making an Out-Of-Print Book While Adding Needed Historical Context:
As an example of how we rescue books that are no longer in circulation, we recently completed a book project where the text was originally printed in the 1790s. This piece changed in content and tone over the many times it had been printed from 1790 to 1960. The book centered on diary entries about a controversial set of events that occurred in early Colonial North America, in the 1750s. The project involved reprinting this story for an extended family, where we added much-needed historical context in an excerpt, reflecting both the period's political and social climate, a nationalistic agenda, and today's understanding of events. This new edition was carefully proofread, corrected for inaccuracies, and designed to mirror the original book layout before being printed and shipped to the family. The family are happy to be able to celebrate their colonial roots by reading something of what happened to their ancestor, while also explaining and acknowledging the use of these stories in American History. This represents their values as well as their traditions.
